Now that stars like Jessica Alba and Gillian Anderson (X-Files’ Scully) are sporting Sanskrit tattoo designs, everyone else is following in their wake. It is becoming harder to stand out from the crowd by relying on the Sanskrit tattoos in the stock of your typical tattoo artist. If you want your tattoo to have an impact, you need to look further afield for unique designs. This is easier to do than to say, now that we live in the Information Age. Here are some alternatives to the tried and true.

Om, Padma (Sanskrit holy lotus flower), Trishula (Shiva’s trident) have become the most popular and common Sanskrit tattoo designs that people get. They are elegant and beautiful, and fully deserve their popularity. But this same popularity is diluting their impact. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t make them unique.

Look at the Om symbol. What you see on nearly everyone’s skin is calligraphy based on the Devanagari script. This is just one of hundreds of different scripts in India and Asia created to record the Sanskrit language. If you are wondering how one language can have many different ways of writing it – that is because Sanskrit is a very ancient language that predates writing. In other words, even before 1500 BC, people spoke Sanskrit but did not write it. When writing was eventually invented, different regions created their own scripts to record down their orally handed-down Sanskrit traditions and legends.

So if you want an Om tattoo, you don’t need to give up the idea just because everyone has done it to death. With a little bit of research online, you can find out how Om is written in another script, e.g. in Tamil, or Tibetan Pali, or Balinese. These are just three. Since Om is so famous, and so important in Sanskrit, you can easily find dozens of different ways to write or draw it. With more effort, you can probably find hundreds more ways.

If you have never gotten a tattoo before, you may want to get a small and simple first tattoo. You don’t want to be too ambitious. Some people discover that getting a tattoo is too painful for them. It is sad to be forced to leave a large beautiful tattoo halfway through. There are many small Sanskrit symbols which are suitable for a first tattoo on the internet.

If you like large tattoos, Sanskrit has many magnificent paintings inspired by their great epic poems like the Ramayana, Mahabharata or Bhagavadgita. There are many scenes of King Rama in battle against the demon Ravana, of the Monkey God Hanuman escaping from Ravana’s army to bring important news to Rama, of Queen Sita undergoing a purifying rite of fire, borne unharmed to her throne by the Lord of Fire.

Somewhere in between the small symbolic tattoos like Om and the large painting-like tattoos are the word tattoos with inspiring quotes and prayers. You can find many excellent verses and prayers from both the Hindu religion and Buddhist religion. Both have many of their most important religious texts translated to English, and you can often find books and websites showing both the original Sanskrit together with the English translation. Among these, the Hindu Rig Veda is one of the oldest surviving and complete religious texts in the world. Equally famous, though not as old, are the Buddhist Heart Sutra and Diamond Sutra.

If you want to stand out from the crowd, simply choosing Sanskrit tattoo designs from the portfolio of your tattoo artist is no longer enough. Hollywood stars have popularized the easily found designs, so you need to search online for unique tattoo designs.
